Infrastructure is the foundation for the functioning and development of society, both now and in the future. Sustainable transport and mobility help maximise equality in our society allowing everyone to move around freely and on equal terms.

Infrastructure projects are complex tasks where we actively utilise our own in-house competencies across Arkitema/COWI. Thanks to in-house engineers and specialists, we have professionalised and optimised our services to ensure an improved integrated design. Our specialists develop modern infrastructure solutions that connect cities and catchment areas in important hubs for the benefit of current and future generations.

Within infrastructure, we work on a number of project types including:

Infrastructure connects the modern city

With strategic infrastructure planning we help our customers and partners redefine and optimise the layout of cities and communities to support public transport in a more sustainable perspective.

We work in an interdisciplinary and holistic way to create durable and more sustainable solutions that take into account societal, social and economic aspects of infrastructure projects. This includes:

  • Identification of needs: Needs and goals for the project are identified in close dialogue with the customer. This involves analysing the area and existing infrastructure and how the project can improve or complement it.
  • Concept development: We develop an overall concept idea for the project that takes into account identified needs, challenges and goals. This also includes an assessment of technical and financial constraints and opportunities.
  • Design phase: We develop detailed design solutions for the project, including documentation and specifications. This also involves simulating and visualising the infrastructure in a digital form to create a better understanding of what the project will look like and how it will function.
  • Construction phase: We monitor the construction and perform quality assurance on the work to ensure that the infrastructure is implemented in accordance with the design specifications and project requirements. This also includes close collaboration with contractors, engineers and other specialists.

An efficient, safe and inviting infrastructure provides more opportunities of variation. With sustainable mobility, catchment areas and suburbs are connected to larger cities in a more efficient way. This requires safe and more interesting infrastructure linking home, workplace, leisure or place of education with public transport while at the same time enhancing city life in the area where we live.

When working on infrastructure projects, we therefore pay special attention to creating secure places where daylight, integration of art and high-quality materials take centre stage and we strive to incorporate parameters such as function, aesthetics, value creation and robustness.

A greener city is based on more efficient infrastructure

Infrastructure is about investing in societal development and a more sustainable future in the long run. We need to remember that what we build and construct now is the future in 10-50 years. Effective infrastructure can help reduce environmental impact by optimising transport and logistics. This may include the development of faster, more energy-efficient and less polluting means of transport, such as trains, bicycles or electric cars, as well as more efficient use of resources.

Therefore, it is important to optimise our infrastructure if we want to ensure a more sustainable future. Infrastructure can help reduce environmental impact, increase access to basic needs and create opportunities to develop societies in a more sustainable direction.

Here you can read about how Trondheim Central Station will become an efficient and responsible public transport hub for the whole of central Norway. A project that looks to the future, but at the same time respects its architectural heritage, drawing inspiration from traditional wooden station buildings and Trondheim's neighbouring buildings.
